Andre Bertel's Karate-Do (To confirm the rumour)

11:10:00 PM
Andre Bertel's Karate-Do (To confirm the rumour)

To confirm the rumour that has spread around the world, it is true that I have recently joined the JAPAN KARATE ASSOCIATION (JKA).

This occurred via the assistance of Naka Tatsuya Shihan.
At the beginning of October I officially began training under Nakamura Masamitsu Shihan in Central Kumamoto, which has been fantastic.
Supplementing this practice I’ve been self-training in Namino and Aso-shi. In these practices I will continue to work on everything I have learned over the past 32 years of Karate-Do, but will now move forward.
Overall, I’d like to offer my appreciation to Naka Shihan, Nakamura Shihan and JKA for their immense support. - André

NEW PUBLICATION: KARATE DO BOOK
NEW PUBLICATION: KARATE DO BOOK: “COMPLETE KARATE-KATA METHODOLOGY”

Sensei Luke Perry, Sensei Antoine Etcheverry of France, Sensei Thierry Lint of Belgium, Sensei Marcus Gutzmer of Germany, Sensei Daniel Acuña of Lima, Peru and Sensei Hernán Beltrán Silva (Chief Instructor of S.K.I.F. Chile), they have got a book and and his opinion is very favorable.
“An extensive and valuable source of reference... there are many insights that will inspire me within its pages.”
Richard Amos Sensei, Chief Instructor of World Traditional Karate Organization (New York)
This work constitutes a practical manual in encyclopedic format which will greatly facilitate the preparation of your classes.

This work is comprised of a tome of 500, A-4 pages. It has some 4,300 colour diagrams and is published in Spanish and English. It deals with work which takes the Heian kata as its starting point and which has a specific methodology and concrete objectives which it uses to create a training method. Furthermore, it is well presented and printed on high-quality paper.

I would be very grateful if you could spread the word about this book amongst your own contacts. I firmly believe that it will be a reference work regarding methodological development, presentation, the exposition of its contents and also regarding the idea of final synthesis (intuitive Karate) which is completely innovative.

The book has been endorsed by the Spanish Karate Federation, The Comunidad Valenciana Karate Federation and has a foreword by Master Antonio Olivo Seba, 8th Dan and International Coach. What is more, several traditional karate associations have already obtained the book since they consider it to be of great interest.

EDWARD MTSHALI SENSEI

EDWARD MTSHALI SENSEI
EDWARD MTSHALI SENSEI

Born 26/04/1948, Sensei Ed has 65 years old. He has been training karate for 47 years and has had to overcome many challenges in his life. His first instructor was Samuel Maimane who was a blue belt. They were training shotokan karate. The only reason he knew it was shotokan was that the book they were using was Sensei Nishiyama’s book and it said it was shotokan. Sensei Ed also has 15 years of judo training under his belt but has never done any gradings. It was very difficult in those days for black people to acquire knowledge and find Sensei’s to train and grade them.
In Sensei Edwards own words “Achievements are not given; you have to work hard to get them. So whatever I achieved I worked hard for them. It means to me there are no shortcuts in life; more specifically if you want quality”. His first grading for yellow belt was a valuable life lesson – he did not make it! “It was so painful to experience failing a grading but that motivated me and it was the first time and the last”.In 1975 he entered a full contact tournament in Durban which he had read about in the newspaper. He became the Kyokushinkai champ that day. Sensei Ed was awarded national colours five times – the first black person to achieve this - and the first time was against a British team in 1977. There were four teams (Indian, Coloured, Black and Springbok). From these teams a SA Invitational team was selected – Sensei Ed was the only black karate-ka to be selected. In 1978 he was part of the official Springbok team which competed against Germany and the USA (the team included Billy Blanks). It was at this time that he started training under Sensei Stan alongside the legendary Geyer brothers. In 1979 he was again in the SA team that travelled to the USA. At this competition he was awarded a special trophy for the most outstanding competitor.
At the Shotocup in Australia in 2006 Sensei Ed became the first black person to be graded to the level of 7th dan by an all Japanese panel from JKA/WF headquarters. He is the only black person in the whole of Africa to achieve this level in JKA. Sensei Ed now he’s in charge of the JKA/WF Southern African Region (26 countries).
Message from Sensei Edward: “Karate-ka must avail themselves of what they want so that they can be helped by their instructors. When you are unhappy ask your Sensei for help. What’s on the inside cannot be seen like karate technique so you need to share it to get help. This is also applicable to injuries. If you don’t have enough time to get to the dojo, you must spend time at home practising Heian katas. These are very important and prepare you for more advanced katas.”
A member of SA JKA’s Governing Body and a highly respected man and karate-ka. We salute you Sensei Edward and are proud to have you as part of our “JKA/WF Sub Sahara Region Family”.

Keinosuke Enoeda
(The Tiger of Shotokan Karate)

Keinosuke Enoeda (榎枝 慶之輔 Enoeda Keinosuke), 4 July 1935 – 29 March 2003) was a Japanese master of Shotokan karate. He was a former Chief Instructor of the Karate Union of Great Britain. Enoeda was ranked 8th dan in Shotokan karate, and was widely renowned as a formidable karateka (practitioner of karate). Following his death, Enoeda was posthumously awarded the rank of 9th dan.

Enoeda was born on 4 July 1935 on the island of Kyushu, Japan. As a youth, he trained in kendo and judo, and played baseball. By the age of 16, Enoeda had reached the rank of 2nd dan in judo. He entered Takushoku University and, being impressed by a karate demonstration there, began studying that martial art.

After graduating from university, Enoeda studied at the Japan Karate Association (JKA) honbu dojo (headquarters training hall) in Tokyo under Masatoshi Nakayama, then the JKA's Chief Instructor. He also trained in kumite under the direction of Taiji Kase. In 1961, he fought a notable tournament match against Keigo Abe, winning by decision after six extensions. He won the JKA All Japan Championship in 1963 against another well known karateka, Hiroshi Shirai. During this period, Enoeda acquired the nickname Tora ("Tiger" in Japanese), after Nakayama had described his fighting.

United Kingdom:

On 20 April 1965, following the JKA's policy of sending instructors abroad to introduce karate to the rest of the world, Enoeda travelled to England with JKA instructors Shirai, Kanazawa, and Kase. He began teaching in Liverpool. One of Enoeda's British students in the late 1960s was karate scholar Harry Cook.
Enoeda and his wife, Reiko (married in 1969), settled in Kingston, Surrey. In 1973, Enoeda led a demonstration of karate on live television for the BBC.[10] Part of the Open Door series it was the first British TV programme entirely about karate. The demonstration included kihon (basic techniques), kata (patterns), Enoeda sparring multiple opponents, Enoeda against Tomita with a large blade, and Dave Hazard breaking a piece of Japanese hardwood.
While Chief Instructor of the KUGB, Enoeda was assisted by: Sadashige Kato (from c. 1966–1973), Shiro Asano (from 1968–1974), Hideo Tomita (from 1973–1978), Masao Kawasoe (from 1974–1982), and Yoshinobu Ohta (from 1982–2003). In 1985, Enoeda was ranked 8th dan.

Later life:

Enoeda wrote several books on karate, including: Shotokan: Advanced kata (1983, in at least two volumes), Shotokan Karate (1996), Shotokan Karate: 10th Kyu to 6th Kyu (1996), Shotokan Karate: 5th Kyu to Black Belt (1996), Karate: Defence & attack (1996, co-authored), and Shotokan Karate: Free Fighting Techniques (1999, co-authored).

Enoeda used to promote his dojo with "Dynamic Karate" posters on the London Underground. He continued teaching karate, at the Marshall Street Baths near Carnaby Street in London, until his death on 29 March 2003. Shortly after his death, the JKA awarded the rank of 9th dan to him. Enoeda left behind his wife, Reiko, and children Daisuke and Maya.

Discover how one sword can become 10,000 swords.

Discover how one sword can become 10,000 swords.

The legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi encouraged his students to have great hidden power. In Samurai Swordsmanship: The Batto, Kenjutsu and Tameshigiri of Eishin-Ryu, expert practitioner Masayuki Shimabukuro and senior student Carl E. Long also encourage readers to discover hidden martial depths through the meaningful practice of the Japanese sword.

Samurai Swordsmanship demonstrates and explains the history, construction and rituals of the 400-year-old art of battojutsu. It is filled with detailed picture sequences that illustrate the art’s most fundamental principles and techniques.

Samurai Swordsmanship includes the following topics:
·       Tameshigiri, or test cutting
·       Batto waza, or sword-drawing forms
·       Uniform care
·       Sword etiquette
·       Kumitachi, or paired drills
·       The philosophy behind the practice

Written as a companion book to Shimabukuro and Long’s best-selling three-part DVD series of the same name, Samurai Swordsmanship will help longtime practitioners and new students master an ancient art that continues to define the motivations and methods of the modern-day warrior.

Masayuki Shimabukuro is an Eighth Dan in Muso Jikiden Eishin-Ryu Iaijutsu and a Black Belt Hall of Fame Weapons Instructor of the Year (2006). He is recognized by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai as 21st Soshihan in the lineage of the Masaoka line of Eishin-Ryu. Shimabukuro also received official appointment by the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai as the School’s International representative for Iaido and Battodo.

Carl E. Long is the vice chairman and director for the Jikishin-Kai International and is responsible for the certification of its instructors in North America, South America and Europe. Long is a five-time recipient of the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai’s yushu-sho, one of the highest awards granted for the performance of iaido.

JKA/WF Instructor Qualification Syste

7:18:00 PM
JKA/WF Instructor Qualification Syste
At JKA/WF headquarters, all instructors are specially trained and licensed to teach. Each of them must train extensively and complete the JKA/WF’s unique specialist instructor training program before receiving certification to fulfill the various functions they are responsible for within the JKA/WF.
The JKA/WF offers three basic kinds of qualifications: authorized Instructor qualifications (for teaching karate); authorized Judge qualifications (for judging and refereeing at tournaments); and authorized Examiner qualifications (for testing and evaluating Dan, instructors and other types of qualification). Typically, it is only those who are already qualified instructors who are eligible for the other two types. In Japan, there are currently individuals who hold all three of these qualifications.

For each type of official qualification, there are four classes: D through

A. Each subsequent class authorizes the instructor to carry out an increasingly broad spectrum of activities appropriate to the individual’s experience with Instructors and Judges outside Japan also carrying out their activites according to the rules for their country. Class A is the highest rank offered in the JKA/WF.

To advance from one class to the next, the instructor must fulfill the certification requirements and successfully complete the formal testing procedure. Testing cannot take place until a minimum of three months after the candidate has attained the Dan and completed the other qualifications required for that class.

Testing for these various classes of qualification are carried out by authorized and certified Examiners specified by the Chief Instructor orby the Technical Committee. Overseas Examiners who have been given special Examiner’s authorization by JKA/WF headquarters carry out their duties in their country based upon the authority given to them.

Generally, qualifications are renewed every three years, and require a training                      session before the renewal can be validated.
