Taikyoku shodan, often simply referred to as "Kihon" is the first of the series, and involves only two basic
moves: the Gedan Barai
or low block, and chudan (middle) Oi Zuki (sometimes
"Oi tsuki"), or lunge
punch. All stances, except at the beginning and end, are Zenkutsu
Dachi (forward stance).
Taikyoku Nidan
The second kata of the series, “T”
Taikyoku nidan, is similar to Taikyoku shodan, except that the
chudan punches are all replaced with upper-level (jodan) punches.
Taikyoku Sandan
The third and last kata of the series, Taikyoku sandan, is similar to
Taikyoku Shodan, except that moves 1, 3, 9, 11, 17 and 19 are Uchi uke or inside-out block in Kokutsu Dachi (back stance).
BASIC KATAS
"Heian"
Part
one of this section includes the group of “Basic
Katas”. It is said that one of FUNAKOSHI
GICHIN’S teachers, ITOSU YATSUNE,
known as the “holy fist”, developed
these Katas for the purpose of
practicing basic techniques.
The
name Heian comes from the
contraction of the characters for Heiwa
and Hantei (Peace and Stability). Pinan or Pinan are synonyms for Hein
that are used in other Karate Styles.
Each Heian Kata begins with a blocking
technique to demonstrate its peaceful character.
