A Message to the overseas Members

15th, March, 2016

Greetings to all the members over the world! I believe you practice Karate very hard.

We had made you worry by our internal confusion about operation of our association. In the period, Mr. Nakahara Nobuyuki had retired from the chairman and I was elected as his successor.

Since then, I have made an effort to operate the organization smoothly putting highest priority on making unified and conciliatory organization. At current our association has resumed peace and been normally operated complying with the law. Please be relieved.

Soon after becoming the chairman, I restored relationship with JKF and made JKA rejoin JKF cooperative associations group. After that, all national members have been able to concentrate on Karate practice.

It is instructors who have major important role in our association activities. Therefore, I have kept close communication with them. Now we have established the system which all the instructors concentrate on their task with solid cooperation each other. Our association will keep working on expansion and development of Karate of “Ippon” style as a martial art for many years to come.

We will have close cooperation with members in all over the world and respond expectation. We appreciate for your support and cooperation in the future, too.

Last but not least, I wish you continued success and prosperity from the bottom of my heart.

A message to Members in abroad

14th, March, 2016

Japan Karate Association was formed in 1948 having the founder of Shotokan Karate-do Funakoshi Gichin Sensei as the highest instructor. Since then for 68 years, “Oshie”, the discipline, as the fundamental of our association has been passed down by Nakayama Masatoshi Shihan,
the first chief instructor, and Sugiura Tokuji Shihan, the second chief instructor, and many people who felt sympathy over the world continuously.

The “Oshie” emphasize spiritual value such as actual practice of courtesy, harmony with oneself and others and so on. It teaches balance of mind and body through concentration on pursuit of “Kime”, which is the biggest goal of the skill. It teaches that Karate’s essence is pursuit of skill and Karate-do is acquiring higher self-control ability by practicing the skill.

We would like to remind this fundamental point again, practice our JKA original Karate-do and show us to the world in 2016. For that, all the instructors have to be united to quest Karate-do and acquire higher skill and instructing ability.

Therefore, I have put instructors at HQ into Shihankai to make it more active. Besides, finally Oishi Sensei has become Fuku-Shuseki Shihan (vice chief instructor). It had been pending by his refusal though many members had expected. His acceptance of this appointment will be result in our strength.

From now on, new strengthen Shihankai is going to altogether concentrate on the development and expansion of JKA. In particular we will emphasize recheck of Kihon and improvement of judging and instructing skill at Spring camp in April 2016 and share the integrated content in the world. We wish the participants will have closer communication and bond each other by practicing hard
together and discussion.
Finally we are very sorry listening that our confusion had made false rumor and buzz and made confuse all over the world last year.

We are going to fully concentrate on the growth and prosperity of JKA from now on.

We appreciate your cooperation and support.

Although we would have liked to inform you all of the ceremony sooner, respecting the bereaved family’s intentions, only JKA directors, graduates of Asia University and limited related persons attended the ceremony.

Japan Karate Association has decided to hold a memorial service in memory of the late Sensei Sugiura to talk and reminisce about his distinguished achievements and personality. We are now in the process of organizing this service.

We will inform you all of further details nearer the time.

JKA Karate Is Scientific and Is Constantly Being Improved

Every technique and movement in JKA karate is based on solid, scientific, physical movement theory. That’s why we put such heavy focus far more than any other organization on kihon, the basic foundational techniques, and their proper form, angle and balance. The result speaks for itself: JKA karate is powerful, solid, stable, and smooth flowing; this has proven itself time and again in tournaments. Despite the excellence of JKA karate, however, it is constantly being improved.

JKA Karate Has Strong Roots

JKA karate is a unique refinement of the Shotokan Style, one of the oldest and most traditional types of Okinawan karate. Since it descends directly from such "Original" sources, it has developed from strong roots underpinned by a long history and a great tradition.

Forging a Karate Mind

5:39:00 PM
Forging a Karate Mind

Karate is not a game of points, weight classes or showy demonstrations. It is a martial art and way of life that trains a practitioner to be peaceful; but if conflict is unavoidable, true karate dictates taking down an opponent with a single blow.

Such an action requires strength, speed, focus, control. But these physical aspects are only part of the practice; they are just the vehicle, not the journey itself.

True karate is based on Bushido. In true karate, the body, mind and Spirit the whole person must be developed simultaneously. Through kihon, kumite and kata we learn to control our movements. But more importantly, we learn to give up control too. We can perform the techniques without thinking about them, and remain focused without having to concentrate on any one thing. In essence, the body remembers how to move and the mind remembers how to be still.

This harmonious unity of mind and body is intensely powerful. Even the greatest physical strength and skill are no match for the power of wholeness.

The result of true karate is natural, effortless action, and the confidence, humility, openness and peace only possible through perfect unity of mind and body. This is the core teaching of Zen, the basis of Bushido, and the  of the JKA’s karate philosophy.

Bushido: The Way of the Samurai

Bushido has been the samurai code of conduct in Japan for centuries. Based firmly on the teachings of Zen, Bushido was intended to help the samurai master their nature and understand their minds and the universe through direct experience as well as through fostering strength, self-control and wisdom.

Bushido is based on seven essential principles:

            1.   Seigi : The right decision and rectitude

            2.   Yuki : Bravery and heroism

            3.   Jin: Compassion and benevolence to all

            4.   Reigi : Courtesy and right action

            5.   Makoto: Truthfulness and utter sincerity

            6.   Meiyo: Honor and glory

            7.   Chugi: Devotion and loyalty

Martial spirit and courage were, of course, essential aspects of Bushido. But for the samurai, Bushido's highest goal was complete virtue in thought and action. Each samurai followed a carefully-designed regimen of polite ceremony and etiquette intended to promote such virtue. With its emphasis on prescribed form, Bushido helped the samurai harmonize mind with body, enabling them to maintain a certain calmness, or heijoshin (literally, "ordinary everyday mind"), even in the face of hardship. Sincerity, kindness, honesty, filial piety and honor all formed part of the core of Bushido. And they were the seed from which the karate tradition grew. These attributes, and the wisdom, understanding and peaceful strength they promote, are some of karate's greatest benefits. They are also among Japan's greatest gifts to the world.
